In daily life, we often have to use a "smiling mask" to suppress our true emotions and thoughts, so as to cater to those in positions of power in interpersonal relationships. Yet when we find ourselves in a superior position within a relationship, we in turn pass this pressure on to the vulnerable party. However, in the fluid dynamics of human relationships, there is no permanent superior, nor is there a permanent inferior. Thus, this kind of repression gets passed around in society, forming an absurd cycle.
