    Directed: Kayla Parker, Stuart Moore
    Production: Kayla Parker

16mm direct animation that intertwines - or 'purls' together - coloured abstractions hand-painted onto clear film leader with circular 'photogram' motifs bleached into the emulsion of a strip of black leader; accompanied by an original sound composition. Purling accentuates the materiality of 'analogue film'. The digital 'frame' shows the entire width of the 16mm strip, including the sprocket holes, as well as a section of each preceding and successive frame, and the linear scratch scored down the length of the artwork by the digital film scanner. Also visible are the incidental marks of hand-painting, such as specks of fluff, and the frame-by-frame notation between each sprocket hole guiding the choreography of the visual music.

  9. Jealousy 07:18 United States 2020
    Directed: Kimberly Burleigh

Jealousy is an experimental 3D animation. It features an elemental digital construction of the plantation house meticulously described in the seminal 1957 novel La Jalousie by French writer Robbe-Grillet. No characters are depicted in the animation – just as the novel emphasizes settings and objects over characters/dialogue. The compulsively observed settings and objects reveal the obsessive mindset of the main character, a jealous husband who suspects his wife of having an affair. The soundtrack features sounds described in the novel; nocturnal animal cries, insects whirring, etc. The animation expands on the novel by making settings and objects dynamic; furniture self-constructs, objects move, and lights shift.

    Production: Robin Noorda
    Dialogue Language: English

Rebirth of Venus is a short arthouse film by filmmaker and artist Robin Noorda, realised in stop-motion animation. This experimental film is based on a poem by Noorda about inequality and oppression. He addresses an array of manifestations of oppression causing the exploitation of nature and violation of human rights and especially women's rights. In Noorda's view, all these phenomena of oppression have a common denominator... The dilapidated and overgrown Piranesi-style buildings are inspired by the iconic architecture of two of the most totalitarian and predatory regimes in European history: the Roman Forum and the concrete structures of Nazi architect Albert Speer. In this magical-realistic setting, insect-like optical instruments create feminine statues that come to life. The miniature set is made of polystyrene packing material. Noorda was inspired by the architectural potential of some of the shapes in the waste material and decided to reuse it. It is a zero budget film.

This film follows a little boy losing his home through mourning and relocation, and questions if it is possible to recapture the feeling in another place. A central theme in the film is the nature of connections between generations. Differences, similarities, and behaviour patterns that are transferred between the old and the new worlds.
